WHO WAS CHARLES SUMNER?
Charles Sumner was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1811. He was an American Statesman and anti-slavery leader known for his lectures on peace and abolition. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1851. He made many speeches vigorously attacking the South and Southern representatives. As a result of his speeches, he was attacked in the senate and beaten until was senseless. Charles Sumner helped to form the Republican Party. During the Civil War he was one of the most powerful men in the senate. He favored freeing the slaves and giving them the right to vote.

Charles Sumner Elementary School is located at Eighth and Jackson Streets, Camden, New Jersey. It was erected by the board of Education in 1926. An addition was built in 1972.
